In this week’s CuraVision video Kathryn talks about Erica and Suzie*, who came to Cura seeking protection insurance to cover their mortgage. Both in their early 40s, non-smokers and really good BMIs. Erica was diagnosed with classical Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) in childhood, but had never experienced any symptoms that impacted on her everyday life.
During our pre-sale process we found only one insurer would consider looking at her application; all others declined. The insurer took the time to look past her diagnosis, to see her as a person and how her EDS affected her on an individual basis. Everything was looking great, so we were surprised to then receive the news that the application had been declined. There was no information in the GP report that contradicted what we had told the insurer, or suggested that Erica’s health was more progressed than originally thought. Having already spoken to the insurer in great detail about the complete lack of affect the EDS made in Erica’s life, we spoke to the insurer again and challenged the decision. We were thrilled to find that decision was quickly overturned and standard terms were issued.
