The Association of Financial Mutuals (AFM) has revealed that nine of its members that offer income protection paid out over £22m in claims to 4,950 policyholders in 2017 – 93.7% claims received compared to the 84.7% figure for mutual written IP reported by the ABI for 2016. Read the article here.
We are proud to be one of those Mutuals and in 2017 we paid 94.7% of claims, which amounted to a total of almost £4.4m in sick pay benefit, demonstrating our continuous commitment to supporting our Members when they need it most.
The principal reasons for not admitting claims were, that claims were in respect of pre-existing disabilities that had not been disclosed and where there was no actual loss of earnings.
Significantly, the most common reason behind making a claim was accident or injury which accounted for 40% of applications, highlighting the value of insuring against the risk of less obvious causes of lost earnings. Some other claims listed included depression, cancer, heart or circulatory complications and back, neck and shoulder problems.
