In the latest episode of CuraVision The ABCs, Kathryn focuses on Eric*. Eric came to Cura with a number of medical disclosures, and approached us for our help in finding him the right policy.

Eric had a long history of bulimia and alcohol dependency. He had gone through many years of treatment and recovery, but having applied for insurances prior to speaking to us, the insurers were not prepared to offer him any terms of cover. The alcohol dependency had led to Eric developing cirrhosis of the liver and some neuropathy, he’d also had two suicide attempts a decade before speaking to us, a response to experiencing some extremely traumatic events.

During our conversations with Eric, and through studying his medical records (with his consent), we liaised with an insurer to establish if they were able to offer him the cover he required. With further tests showing that his liver function had returned to normal, the insurer was prepared to make the offer of terms and we were able to give Eric the good news that he was able to access the protection insurance he had been seeking. Covid-19, GPRs & Signposting to Specialists

With the current strain on the NHS there has been a mix of responses from insurers and GP surgeries over the completion of medical reports. Some GPs are returning reports quicker than ever, others have said that they cannot possibly complete them at this time.

If you are an adviser speaking with a client hitting medical stumbling blocks, you could ask them to share any medical letters or specialist reports that they have about their health, if you feel comfortable seeing and securely storing the information. This information could potentially be acceptable to the insurer as evidence of health, bypassing the need to speak to medical professionals.

In the current pandemic, it is also becoming increasingly important to establish if clients have had Covid-19, been medically advised to shield, have been in contact with someone that is known to have had Covid-19 or have been symptomatic. This is causing postponements of cover with many insurers, but not all.

It could be worthwhile looking at options to refer clients to specialists if you have exhausted all of the options that you have and cannot arrange the insurance yourself. You can either setup a commercial arrangement with a specialist broker or direct your client to BIBA who now offer a signpost to specialist’s service, where they will try find a specialist who can help you customer.
