In her latest CuraVision The ABCs, Kathryn talks about Hannah*. Hannah came to us because she had recently taken on a mortgage with her partner and wanted to make sure that she had life insurance in place.

Having spoken to Hannah about her protection requirements, medical history and current health status, it was established that she could do with life insurance to protect her mortgage and some additional family protection too. For Hannah there was not just the HIV that needed to be discussed with the insurer, she had also had Kaposi’s sarcoma (a form of cancer) and hepatitis C in the past.

It is important to remember when going through an application with a client who is living with HIV, that some choose to not tell their GP, only liaising with a specialist. This is vital to know when going through an application, as this will not be on the insurer’s questions, it’s one for you to ask as an extra. This ensures that there are no breaches in confidentiality between the client and their GP, when the insurer comes to seeking further medical records. If you have a client where their GP doesn’t know, you will have to contact the insurer immediately after submitting an application, to tell them that the medical report request from the GP cannot mention HIV. They will need to get any further evidence from the specialist.
