Private Medical Insurance

What does Private Medical Insurance cover?

Private medical insurance is designed to cover the costs of private medical treatment, for what are commonly known as ‘acute conditions’ that start after your policy begins. This covers medical treatment and normally means you will get treated more quickly than on the NHS.

Private medical insurance gives you more choice about the treatment you receive. You can usually choose the specialist/consultant you see at a time to suit you. Pre-existing conditions are usually excluded from the cover.

Different types of cover

There are many types of cover but with most private medical insurance policies, you pay a monthly premium and the policy will then pay out an amount, dependent on your plan, for any treatment you require. With some policies, it is possible to reduce the cost of cover by demonstrating you lead a healthy lifestyle, for example, by going to the gym regularly.
