The importance of having a healthy diet is well known – it’s covered in the news, television, magazines and online. It can be overwhelming, but you can use this to your advantage when discussing your clients’ protection needs with them.

Obesity has now overtaken smoking as the biggest risk to health in some parts of England. In fact, the Welsh Government has recently launched a strategy to combat obesity and create a routine of healthier eating and promoting more active lifestyles. It is also encouraging people to begin a dialogue with their GP about how to make better life choices and improve their health.1

The need for life cover

Our recent report, An Unhealthy Situation, found that advisers often find it difficult to discuss health with clients, particularly obesity, and illnesses caused as a result of being overweight.

In 2016/17 there were over 600,000 admissions in NHS hospitals where obesity was recorded as the primary or a secondary diagnosis, an increase of 18% from the previous year.2

If your client has a BMI of over 30, it is more likely that they will have associated conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure – conditions which can lead to difficulties buying life cover.

At The Exeter, we’re committed to reflecting changing lifestyles and health, ensuring our cover extends to those who really need it. We have recently extended our life cover to ensure our policies have one key point of difference, each is designed specifically for hard to insure clients.

Managed Life is responsive cover for clients with type 2 diabetes or a high BMI up to 48.

Real Life is designed for clients who have suffered either serious or multiple health conditions, such as:

  • Cancer
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • A BMI up to 55
  • Complex heart conditions
  • Multiple conditions.
