Part of my everyday morning routine before I get up is a quick look at my phone including the inevitable social media posts on LinkedIn. One post from a friend and former colleague of mine was particularly poignant and I wanted to share it with you.
For me, this demonstrates the importance of having protection, but perhaps even more importantly – proper financial advice.
Charlotte and her boyfriend Joe were in the process of buying a house together a few years ago as first-time buyers and as part of that process, they took out life assurance policies. That looked to be a sensible course of action as they were not married at the time.
2 weeks before they were due to move into their new home, Joe suddenly died of a condition called Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome. He was 27. This was also just a few weeks before Charlottes 30th birthday.
So, that’s an obvious human tragedy that nobody could have seen coming for someone so young.
But worse was to come.
Those single life assurance policies were not written into Trust and there was no Will.
What that meant was the proceeds of Joe’s life policy were paid in line with the laws of intestacy – and that didn’t feature Charlotte.
The objective for those life policies was to simply pay off the mortgage should either of them die. It was to allow them to keep their home – simple.
But what I can tell you is the life policy claim went to Joe’s family. Charlotte never got any of those policy proceeds. She couldn’t afford the house on her own which meant she ultimately lost it.
How many clients do you have who are not married or in a civil partnership?
We know there are lots of mortgage protection policies out there and many of them are single life cover.
The vast majority of them are not written into trust. But the good news is they still can be.
But realistically, it’s going to require an adviser like you to sort that out. The average policyholder won’t be able to do this without some proper advice and guidance.
