Our cancer promise to you and your clients

Did you know that 1 in 2 people in the UK will be diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetime?1 It’s why, at Bupa, we’re committed to doing everything we can to diagnose, treat and support both your individual clients, as well as your business clients and their employees who experience the disease.

Our latest step is to partner with a leading hospital provider, HCA Healthcare UK, to create a network of Specialist Centres for breast cancer. Find out what they do and where they are located below.

What’s the story so far?

We’ve removed barriers to help more people check worrying symptoms sooner rather than later. Direct Access is a service that allows customers to call us immediately with any cancer symptom, usually without waiting to see a GP.* Already, it has helped over 3,500 customers, of which 68% were guided directly to a consultant.2

The latest development, launching in 2019: Specialist Centres for breast cancer

These new centres, launching in January 2019, will be based in London and Manchester. We will be accrediting other centres across the UK when they meet our strict criteria. These centres unite internationally-acclaimed clinical experts in one place and provide Bupa customers with market leading speed of access, a first for a UK insurer

Saving customers the worrying wait

In one visit to a Specialist Centre for breast cancer, customers
can have scans and tests using the latest equipment, followed by a consultation to discuss their results, within two working days of first calling Bupa with their symptoms. Then, if it is cancer, their treatment will start within 31 days, twice as fast as the national target. Specialist Centres for breast cancer unite internationally-acclaimed clinical experts in the best independent hospitals^, so for diagnosis of breast cancer a customer can see them in one place on the same day. If it is cancer, their treatment will be overseen by a multidisciplinary team including a named clinical nurse specialist, and they’ll have access to support for themselves and their family.

Helping clients manage the cost of cancer
Not only could diagnosing cancer earlier save lives, it could also save businesses money. Customers will be diagnosed in days and should they need it, have faster access to evidence-based treatment. All planned by a multidisciplinary team of experts. This, combined with new agreements on drug costs, helps us to manage inflation and reduce costs associated with delays in diagnosis and variations in treatment.

What’s to come?

We’re continuing to invest and develop our cancer promise and expect further Specialist Centres for breast cancer to open in 2019 in other locations across the UK, providing they meet the strict criteria.
