PMI is firmly back in focus

As we move into the year ahead, private medical insurance is firmly back in focus, driven in no small part by the continued pressure on NHS waiting lists. For many clients, delays to diagnostics and treatment are no longer a headline issue but a lived experience, affecting their health, income and long-term plans.

Extended waiting times are prompting more clients to reassess their healthcare expectations. Increasingly, conversations are shifting from if they need private healthcare support to how quickly they can access it when it matters most. This creates a valuable opportunity for advisers to position PMI as part of a wider resilience strategy, supporting faster diagnosis, earlier intervention and access to treatment when time is critical.

PMI is no longer just about covering hospital stays. Access to diagnostics, mental health support and quicker treatment pathways are becoming central to the value clients see, particularly when NHS delays risk prolonged absence from work or disruption to business continuity.

Against this backdrop, adviser support has never been more important for TRM. We’re pleased to confirm that Gemma Penkethman recently joined the team, bringing a wealth of PMI knowledge and experience to support advisers with client conversations, case design and ongoing market insight.

With healthcare firmly on client agendas, now is the right time to utilise our tools to make sure your name is on everyone’s lips when they think of PMI, and ensure you have the expertise and support they need to help clients navigate an increasingly challenging healthcare landscape.

Help clients review their home insurance after the festive period

January is the ideal time for advisers to help clients review their home insurance after the festive period, when household contents often increase.

Christmas gifts such as jewellery, watches, TVs, laptops, and other high-value items can significantly change a customer’s contents total sum assured. While many policies include a temporary seasonal uplift, this is time-limited and does not usually remove the need to specify high-value items long term.

Many customers assume that increasing the overall contents sum insured automatically protects everything in full. In reality, most policies apply single item limits and valuables limits, meaning items above a certain value must be listed separately and accurately valued to ensure they are covered.

January also brings ongoing risks, including unoccupied homes, winter weather damage, and theft. Advisers can add real value by helping clients understand policy conditions and ensuring cover still reflects their circumstances.

Key January actions for advisers:

  • Encourage a post-Christmas contents review
  • Check whether new high-value items need to be specified
  • Explain how item limits and valuables limits work
  • Reinforce good security and risk awareness

Starting the year with a simple insurance review helps reduce underinsurance risk and positions advisers as proactive, trusted professionals.
