Hot on the heels of its recent added-services improvements Legal & General has introduced a non-underwritten option to upgrade the children’s critical illness cover. This benefit, titled Children’s Critical Illness Extra, extends cover from the current 37 conditions up to a total of 51. Payments will remain limited to the lower of £25,000 or 50% of the main sum insured, however importantly the upgrade covers children from birth up to the 22nd birthday without the need to be in full time education. Additionally, a child terminal illness benefit of £10,000 has been included.

Additional Child-only Conditions

  • Benign Spinal Cord Tumour – Surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy to treat a non-malignant tumour in the spinal cord, spinal nerves or meninge within the spinal canal.
  • Brain Injury due to Anoxia/Hypoxia – Death of brain tissue due to inadequate blood supply resulting in permanent neurological deficit with persisting symptoms.
  • Cerebral Palsy – A definite diagnosis resulting in permanent neurological deficit with persisting symptoms.
  • Child Intensive Care Benefit – Mechanical ventilation via tracheal intubation for 7 consecutive days in a hospital ICU unit resulting from injury or illness.
  • Crohn’s Disease – Surgical removal of a part of the bowel or small intestine on two separate occasions or removal of the entire large bowel due to Crohn’s disease.
  • Cystic Fibrosis – A definite diagnosis
  • Diabetes Type 1 – A definite diagnosis with permanent insulin injections
  • Down’s Syndrome – A definite diagnosis
  • Hydrocephalus – Invasive brain surgery to treat hydrocephalus
  • Muscular Dystrophy – A definite diagnosis
  • Spina Bifida & Myelomeningocele – A definite diagnosis
  • Ulcerative Colitis – Removal of the entire large bowel due to ulcerative colitis
  • Terminal Illness – Life expectancy of 12 months or less due to an advanced and rapidly progressing incurable condition.

  • Carcinoma in situ of the breast – If treated by surgery
  • Low Grade Prostate Cancer – If undergoing treatment
